Putting the dog holes in my bench top today - what's the best distance of the holes from the front edge of the benchtop?
I've seen anything from 3 to 7" - what's your preference? And what should I consider when deciding where to place mine?

I'd go with 3 inches.

Will they be in line with a vise dog?

Will they be in line with a vise dog? Well, they might be down the road sometime... right now I'm just going to use a wonderdog when I need that sort of clamping, and see if that's enough for my work....

In that case... since there's nothing critical at this point to align 'em to... shoot for 3". Later, if you decide to, you can add another row 3" further back... or 6" further back... or whatever you decide you need.
3" puts you nearly in line with a 7" woodworking vise, should you mount one on the end. You might put 'em at 3-1/2", counting on that 7" vise.

Kevin, You can add a couple dog holes to the top of your leg vise and be cookin with gas. Generally something on top of the bench doesn't need a whole bunch of force to hold it, mostly just to add some stability.

While you're at it, having two parallel dog rows is handy at times. Whether you use round or rectangular dogs, four dogs stabilize a round table top or similar big stuff. I made mine 3 1/ 2" and 13 " from the front edge.

I would stress the notion of in line with your vise dog...or the one you will buy. Look them over, see what looks to be one you would/might buy and go with that. It makes for a great way to hold stuff. I'm not in my shop but mine are about 6-8 inches apart.

Good suggestions I might also add that if you are building a wooden vise, then the dog needs to be in line with the screw - or you'll rack the vise (unless you use a pair of dogs and always hold your work between the two)
