Picked up the Jet 1100 (1.5 HP) dust collector today for $100. It was missing both the filter bag and collection bag. Priced them today, they both run about $80. Seems to run great. Sure beats the dog out of $500. I think I'll switch it to 220 'cause I already have the dedicated circuit in my garage just waiting for it. With all the cedar plank ripping I'm about to do this should be perfect. Now, I'll be able to breathe! I may even spend the extra dough on that new HEPA filter instead of the bag. Do you think it's worth the extra dough? about $200. It is rated @ .2 the bag @ .5 can ya'll tell a difference in that?

Kyle - if you have zero bags to start with - spend the extra money for the HEPA bags, easily worth it. I mean....if you have two bags.... it's hard when you first buy a DC to spend another 100 or 200 bucks on bags, but if you start with zero.... just get the better bags. Easy.
Grats man - that is a nice score, hellova motor for 100 bucks!!

Penn State Industries has some really good bags for that model. They usually include the band to hold the bag in place.

NICE Score!! Now - i'm gonna poo poo on bags for ya ... I have THAT very collector. I took that little 4" splitter gizmo and run all 6" duct work. That was upgrade #1. Any hope that thing will have of pulling close to that 1100cfm is gonna be through a single 6" duct. Second. Forget filter bags. I ain't seen a bag yet that can beat a canister. Several reasons: 1) they have FAR more surface area which means they put less resistance on the impeller. 2) they filter finer particle sizes WITHOUT a cake of dust on 'em. and 3) because of that extra surface area, they pull more air for longer times between cleaning off that cake of dust. You'll almost certainly get better airflow right off the bat using a canister. Personally, I have a Wynn Environmental filter on my Jet 1100dc. Got mine here: www.wynnenv.com/35A_series_cartridge_kit.htmCall 'em up - Rick Wynn is a hell of a guy and will be glad to guide you through the selection process. I have the spun bond polyester one which is GREAT. They have a new one now that seems to combine the high surface area of the paper one and the durability of the fabric one. I dunno much about it - but i can say that surface area is pretty helpful in keeping the impeller moving as much air as possible. That cartridge was upgrade #2 - it's tough to say which did more for my airflow - but i know they complement each other. A third upgrade was a Thien Baffle built into the donut ring. This helps keep the really fine dust from blowing up into the filter some - buying me even more time before filter cleanings. Works really well. I was surprised because it didn't fully make sense in my head - but basically the baffle sorta cuts off the updraft, basically. I cut mine outta 26ga galvanized steel sheet from the BORG - all of about $12 if memory serves. It works FANtastically. My longest run is about 35' with about 300 degrees of elbows total and it still pulls a wind you can feel behind my miter saw. Enough to catch most of the dust flying off that blade. Kinda a fanatic, i am GREAT score!

Jason, I think I will go your route. Not only a better filter but a better deal as well. Rockler wanted $200 for the Jet, this Wynn is only $165 and it is even washable. Can't beat that. I put a call in today, I guess they close early on Sat. Got an answering machine. I hope to place the order Monday. Are you saying that I should use 5" hose and just hook the one hose to whichever machine I am using? Don't split it? What if I have four hoses and close the other 3 off? That would still give me the same cfm's right? That baffle system looks cool too. Simple and effective. Thanks for the advice, I needed that.

Gomer - the more hoses you run the more it will eat up your cfms - even if you have ports on everything. You won't get a total air tight fit on anything....the less piping you have connected to the machine at any one time, the better suction you'll get. That's not to say you can't have gates on all the extra hosing and go that route - but you won't have the same cfm as if you ran one hose from the machine. That's my thoughts anyways.

The rule of thumb for dust collection is to run the largest diameter duct as far as possible to cut down on restriction. Also a hose is more restrictive than a smooth walled duct so use as little hose as possible. I ran 7" HVAC duct sall the way to my first wye then I ran 6" because I couldn't find a 7" wye. If you're just planning on using hose, you want to use the largest diameter you can.

Zac, your thoughts have cleared up my thoughts. This happens to me way too often. Mucho Gracias to you my friend. Mark, Your point makes perfect sense also. I think I will use hose for economy factor, plus the run will only be about 20', so I think if I go with single 5" hose it will work fine. Hope so anyway. Boodrow, Thanks. I'm always huntin' a bargain. Wife wants to go to Canton tomorrow for First Trades Day. Never been. But she told me it is tool Haven, so I'll tag along.
