OMG! I'm afraid I would probably be puppyless after that happening. You have a lot of self discipline to realize that a puppy is , well, a puppy and they sure like to chew on things. That has to be a major character builder, Elizabeth.

Oh, that HURTS.
But... that's the nature of the world we live in. You gained much, VERY much, in the doing... and you take the results with your in your memory forever. I'd love to have seen it, but alas 'tis not to be.

Oh man that sucks! I was really looking forward to seeing this. Oh well, having had dogs chew up things myself, I know you just have to forgive them. They are after all just puppies.

Hey, guys: Finished the box sides yesterday, mitered corners and all. I made it with a bulls-eye design in the corners. All the patterns matched (it was tricky). Brought it up for Neil to see, and take pics for you. I made it in time for our 30th anniversary on Monday. Neil is surprising me with something pretty to put in it. I left the little box on the coffee table while I was fixing supper. My puppy really, really, liked it .... I know I'll be able to laugh pretty soon, but not yet. I'm too mad at her. 2 1/2 months down the tube.... Jenny must be part Beaver cause she ate almost all of it. I've kept the few slivers left to try and reproduce the pattern. What a shame! All that work, study, work, study, test & retest... down in the belly of a PUP! That hurts...!! So sorry to hear it...

Elizabeth, another option you might look into regarding making your own hinges would be to check out someone who does stain glass work. When my wife and I took lessons several years ago we made a box from stained glass. It was not as small as what you are talking about but we used small brass tubing with a brass rod running thru it. We soldered the brass to the copper foil used to make the box so I don't know why you couldn't find some brass sheet and solder it to the tubing. Not sure if that makes sense to you or not. I'm not real good at explaining it but I bet if you have a stainglass place nearby you could ask them.

Thank you all for the commiseration. And, Mike, your option makes lots of sense. I was sewing up a pillow Jenny got into yesterday ( ) and happened to focus on the safety pins. Thought these could be put to service somehow, as there is already a built in curl. This idea developed from the link Cody sent on making my own hinge. Will have to give it further thought. I'm already laughing. No use crying over spilled milk. We're having our anniversary dinner with friends who are also celebrating their 30th. We married on the same day. Clay has been observing the progress in my little box and is bound to ask if I finished it. I can't wait to say: "Oh, yes, it's finished!" and then show the slivers! I can't wait to get back to the shop and start over. I learned a lot in making this first one and I think I can streamline the next by not repeating some of the pitfalls I encountered. You're right. It isn't easy. BTW: As I was replying to you I heard a rip coming from the living room. Jenny just tore a hole in our ottoman! I'm about to go ballistic but instead will go to Lowe's and pick up the Petunias I want to plant today. Have a good one! I'll be able to show you my the little creation soon. It may have some dog hide in it. ;D

Congratulations on your thirtieth anniversary, Elizabeth. That's a significant milestone, indeed.
I'm looking forward to seeing your next creation.

Thanks! Neil was going to put a new ring in the little box. We'll have a great time nonetheless.
