I have a 1/8 X 2.5 x 37" + length of M2 tool steel I have no use for. It came from my father's shop. He used it to grind custom molding knives from. Will let it go for any reasonable trade.

MAN THAT SOUNDS INTERESTING.
M2. Good air-hardening. Bootchy to work with except by grinder. NEAT STUFF. THREE FEET of it!
What might I trade ya for it?

My problem is establishing a value for the steel. I have absolutely no idea what it is worth. I did some looking online but did not come up with a number. Lot's of tech stuff about the metal but nothing regarding cost.
I'm not looking to "profit' from the deal, just get something in my shop that is useful to me. A few ideas include a decent marking gauge for DTS; a decent DT saw (to replace the hacksaw I'm presently using); one of those Wixley style angle finders for the TS; 23 gauge pin nailer etc. I need a base for a PC 690 series router motor - used will do if it is in good shape. Make me an offer.

It took some doing, but I finally found a retailer of M2 HSS flats similar to that. Siddown. You're not going to believe this. kmac-distribution.com/tool-steel/m2-bars.htmThe thinnest they carry is 3/8", and the shortest is 144? (12'). Your 1/8"x37" is slightly over 1/12 of a 3/8"x144" of 2.5" bar, which sells for $2,249.76. That's about $190 worth of steel! EGADS! Now I've got that queasy feeling... Is it HARDENED or ANNEALED? Will it readily scratch ordinary soft steel? If it's annealed, it takes a special furnace to get it hot enough to harden, but it works easily. If it's hardened, any cutting or shaping is done only with a grinder.

M2 tool steel
McMaster item number 7319K247
1/8 x 2.0 x 36"
$183.99
Hardness = Rc-64
You can forget about cutting that with anything but carbide, and even at that hair deep cuts and you will still blow your tools.
Yep - grind if just fine. In fact grind it no problem.
You could cut it with an abrasive cutoff saw.
McMaster carries smaller pieces also.
