I bought this vise recently:
www.wttool.com/product-exec/product_id/19181/nm/Quick_Acting_Woodworking_Vises_WT_Import_
It came yesterday. So.....
I mounted my new vise today. It was mounted on a 50+ year old rock maple butcher block workbench. (Just a little background.) 2.5" thick, BTW.
I mounted the vise with my bar clamps, and marked the holes for the carriage bolts. I had to go to Lowes this AM to buy the bolts, and stop nuts. I had 3/8" washers & regular nuts here already.
So anyway, I drill thru the bottom of the bench to mount it. I snapped a 1/8" drill bit doing it. That rock maple is some seriously hard wood!
Used another bit, finally got thru.
So, got the pilot holes thru. Got my Forstner bits out, drilled a 7/8" hole in the top of the bench to countersink the carriage bolts. Then, I drilled a 3/8" hole thru those to the bottom to get the bolts in there. Well, I hit a piece of all thread embedded in the bench to hold it together. Snapped a 3/8" bit too.
So, I had to get out my good cobalt bit set to drill thru the all thread. Turned out the holes weren't exactly plumb. So, I had to ream out the thru holes to 1/2" to allow for some wiggle room.
Used a 1/2" cobalt bit this time, so no breakage there.
Go to mount the vise, one carriage bolt has mashed threads. Had to stop, get out my tap & dies, & re-thread the bolt.
Finally get the carriage bolts thru the bench, got the nuts on, and start tightening it up. Well, a socket won't fit, so I had to use a box end wrench.
Fine & dandy. Got everything tightened up, go to put the face screws in.
Over torque one of them, snap off the head. So, I pre-drilled the other one, and got it in.
Over 2 hours spent to mount a simple vise. No wonder I'm tired already, huh? Anyway, it's on there now, I hope it don't drop off anytime soon.
Man, who knew mounting a simple vise was so much trouble?
