So, this guy at the craft show wanted a .9MM pencil. Stupid me, I told him no problem. It turns out there is not one single pencil kit available that uses a .9MM lead. At least, not one I have been able to find So, over at IAP I asked and they says Pentel has a .9MM mechanical pencil which you can take apart and use the guts to make your own kit. Easy as pie, right? Hardly. Anyway, after some tribulations and trying to come up with a way to get this pencil done...here is my prototype. Scavenged a few parts from some other pen/pencil kits and used the plastic nib from the Pentel, custom cut some 8MM tubes and viola! Here it is...the Frankenstein of pencils ;D I actually like this prototype well enough that I may do some more of these if I can find a source for the parts I need...a 8MM finial end piece and clip (gotta be silver or chrome in color). I am going to have to try and track down someplace to get these parts from.

That's pretty cool....honestly - I would be satisfied with a 7mm but - I am most pleased that you were able to rip a pencil apart - and make it work for you.... THAT, my friends, is cool beans!

Thanks Zac, I was pretty tickled that I was able to do it and it turned out well enough to try it again.
Joe, this is a solar powered pencil...no need to plug it in ;D

I bet that was a pain in the patootie! You sure did a good job with that... I like the little dip at the halfway point and the whoop-de-doos at the nib... Nice finish too! I hate pencils.... you are a lot more patient than I am... when asked if I can make a pencil I say "I can, but I'm not going to"

Thanks Marc. Yep, it was a challenge and not something I'd like to do often. I should have known you would like the whoop-de-doos ;D
I'm actually trying to find an inexpensive kit that I can use to make these and put a center band on it. It was not much fun drilling the full length piece.
I have never seen anyone make one of these with the finial end hardware and clip, but it just bothered me the way the pencil looked without anything on that end so I had to figure something out that would work. A cartridge pen clip held on using a click pen hardware worked, but I had to drill the opening bigger for the plunger to fit.

Nice pencil and with your story Doug now I know why I stay away from pencils. Did a couple kits when I started out not a one work well with me. Just a personal preference of my own. Going to stick to atlas, roller ball, ero, and slimline pens. Might try a fountain pen just for the fun of it.
