I'm working on a rocking chair for a two year old. I promised our pool guy that I would build one for his daughter's birthday. He's a single-parent father and I thought it was great that he wanted something like that for his daughter. I also cut him a deal...one week's worth of pool care...$56...for the rocker. It's not the Hal Taylor design but I think it will look good when finished. Then I'll see about turning something. I've got a couple sources for some free Walnut. Stay tuned.

Heck, I'll clean your pool for a rocking chair! (I'm sure he really appreciates the deal - good of you to do that for him!)

I learned by reading, and by listening.
Eventually, you'll develop a sense of what may or may not be such a good idea to do. Following my gut has saved me a lot of hospital time.
If there is one, and you can afford it, you can attend some sort of class on it, around here there isn't one and if there had been it'd have been outside my price range, so I just started off small and run through wood. The number one source for knowledge? Here. Not just this forum, but any woodworking-woodturning forum, you'll learn more from guys who know what they are doing than you could possibly learn on your own.
Mostly, the stuff that I found so valuable prior to starting was to know which tools could be used for what. No roughing gouges on bowls, no skews on bowls, make a wider slot for parting tools to prevent it heating up, etc.
It's not as tough as it seems, it'll come to you, slowly at first, then you'll hit a moment when it feels like you're learning from doing it instead of just making large pieces into small round ones.

Certainly what TJ pointed out, think safety, that lathe as any power tool can hurt you .
Know your tools and how to use them, anchoring the tool, riding the bevel.direction of cut.position of flute and on and on,tool sharpening, balancing the blank,,,,,,,,Yes lots to learn but easily accomplished with effort and desire
I have a respirator built into a helmet, face shield all the goodies made by 3M..........but eye protection is foremost
There are lots of videos available(look at 'em) but a couple of sessions with an experienced turner is the greatest asset to a turning future.

this might be an odd question but how do you learn to turn safely It's simple. You just dodge all the exploded bowls and vessels until you get proficient at turning. BTW, I'm still dodging. ;D

how do you learn to turn safely youtube has a lot of turning videos that will help a whole lot. Like Dick said, the best is to get personal tutoring, but videos will help if you don't have that as an option. Lots of guys buy professional videos too - there are lots of them available and that is probably the smart way to do it, but there were too many to choose from for me so I just trudged through a lot of youtube videos. Woodcraft also has some good advertising videos showing hands on use of their tools - I watched a bunch of those too. You can check them out here: www.woodcraft.com/Resources/Videos.aspx

Im gettin close to bein there so hopefully I will begin turnin again soon. I attended my local wood turner meetin today and one of the members had some black locust he was givin away, so i grabbed a chunk of it. That will prob be the first thing I turn when I get back tuit.
