Got a bottle(8oz) of Accelerator in the mail yesterday. And it didn't come with the spray top! I figured, hey! it's a plastic bottle and this bottle with the spray pump on it is plastic too. So I poured the Accelerator into its new bottle. When I returned from the store with my paper towels and milk, the bottle had melted and was just a smooshy(is that a real word?) mess of goo and laying there on the floor....empty!!!
Apparently the main ingredient is Acetone! And it doesn't play well with others!! Go figure, the plastic bottle it came in was just fine?
Scott (there goes 8oz real quick) B

Yep, there's all sorts of different "plastics" out there.
Funny thing is, there are maybe only a couple of different plastics to which CA won't adhere, but it seems every little part of a toy or what have you that I have tried to fix with CA seems to be made of one of those non-CA adhering plastics. Sometimes you can get away with "sizing" the surfaces with CA, let that cure, then apply another drop and bond the parts, but that is not always the case.

It's probably just common knowledge in the field, but I didn't know it....figured someone else might save a few bucks from my misfortunate adventure.

JFR... baking soda works very well as an accelerator for CA glue...
EDIT: Do NOT overdo it, though! Too much soda will make it cure so quickly it'll fracture all over the place!

Any time you change bottles on accelerator, alwas check the bottom the the bottles and make sure the recycle numbers are the same, then you should have no problems.

Well, I knew that there BIG differences in plastics and in regards to chemicals/solvents being placed in them.... be careful. I bought a plastic squirt bottle from Hobby Lobby to hold my denatured alcohol but was concerned that it might not hold the DNA. I tried it out - it it just fine. No weakening of the bottle, it doesn't feel squishy at all - been there a week or more.

I have no idea what you just said....what is a recycle number, and where is it? Someplace on nearly any plastic container should be a little "recycle triangle" with a little number in it. It's often on the bottom, but could be on the side someplace. That number indicates the family of plastic the container was made from, so that it can be separated at recycle time & grouped with other containers of the same plastic family for large-scale one-method recycling (solvent melting, heat melting, whatever) with as little cross-contamination of the plastics as reasonably possible. So... yeah. Look for a little triangle shape with a little number in it. All plastics with the same little number are similar, with similar characteristics as to solvent resistance, melting point, specific temperature, specific gravity, density, and other properties. They're not guaranteed EQUAL, but similar. We just don't have enough available recycle numbers to divide 'em out by specific plastic species (there are TONS of species of plastic), and it's not generally necessary.

Y'all might think about trying out the aerosol accelerator. I was hesitant to try it at first, but now it is all I use. Much better control and when you want just a tiny amount it is very good. Unfortunately, that is the one thing Monty does not carry. I get mine from Woodturningz.

Hey, don't feel like the lone stranger.
I got some 8 oz. accelerator bottles from Monty but I didn't get a small spray bottle. No sweat, I thought. I had bought a very small bottle of accellerator from Hobby lobby to tide me over until Monty's order came in...I'd just use that, now empty, bottle.
Bad decision.
It began melting just like yours did. Fortunately, I caught it just as it was going soft and was able to salvage the accelerator but the bottle was toast.
I've been using the spray cap with the 8 oz. bottles but the suction tube only goes halfway to bottom. Next CA order, I'll get a smaller spray bottle that's compatible with the accelerator Monty sells.

I also had gotten an 8oz bottle of accelerator from monty, I had also gotten a 2 oz bottle with sprayer of his milder accelerator (I actually like the milder better it doesn't seem to make it turn white like the stronger stuff) anyway I had used all the mild so filled that bottle with the stronger stuff. Came back to where I store this stuff 20 minutes later and the bottle was gone (sprayer was still there) and the liquid had evaporated.
