Would like to give mention to Gecko....as he provided the wood! Thank you!! This happens to be my second attempt. Used the Miniwax Wood Hardener and buffed on a coat of wax. Total time spent? Less then 15minutes! I'll be keeping this one! What could I do to improve? Scott (need to work on finishing) B

Looks like you got much closer to correct dimensions than your first pen. You are already improving. I don't know about the wood hardener finish - you will have to let us know how that holds up over time. Beautiful wood!

This one does look MUCH closer to what the barrels should end up looking like, in terms of size.
Improvements? I know nothing about the wood hardener, so I can't knock it - BUT - it doesn't sound like a finish that I would want to try....well, definitely not JUST that.... but again, I've never tried it so I can't really comment. I'd strongly encourage you keep trying the CA finish.... my biggest fear is that I'd ruin tons of pens working it out. Not true - I was able to keep my first real attempt at a CA method - and have never thrown one away due to a finishing problem since. (knock on wood!)
The other thing - it's great to be able to knock out pens in a short amount of time, but relax - enjoy this. For me, at least, it is NOT work - i.e. it is a HOBBY, a LOVE, it is FUN for me.
At some point - you'll turn a wood that is much more finicky - and it'll be easier to slowly work it down to size. I remember, I had turned several Cocobolo pens and some other woods that turn real easily - I then tried something that is more finicky and BOOM - crack it on the lathe, having NO idea what I did wrong...well - I was pushing too hard with a gouge that could probably have stood to be sharpened.... I learned - now I sharpen the gouge often, ESPECIALLY when turning something REALLY hard.
It looks good - keep 'em coming!!

this is my favorite one so far. I hung with the ca finish and it paid off huge. once you figure it out you will be glad you did. I always thought to myself i could always sand it down and start over if i screwed up the ca finish. oh and yes I have had to sanded a ton of these down and started all over, trust me.
