I'm making a bracket for a off camera flash.I starter out with a 20" x 2" x 1/8" + piece of aluminum flat strap .I put a couple of 90 degree bends in it ,,,,,,,oh well I don't need to go into all the details but I am going to put a wooden handle on it with the aluminun sandwiched in between the wood and then a heavy cord wrap over that.Heres what I did to secure the wood in place.I drilled several 1/8" holes in the aluminum then clamped one side of the wood to it and marked the hole locations on the wood, then did the same to the other side, then drilled them 1/4" deep from the inside.I mixed up some epoxy, scuffed up the aluminum and buttered the holes full.I then put a liberal amount on both wood sides and clamped that in place on the aluminum. The thought here is that the epoxy will ooze all together internal to the handle as a monolithic glue up and make some internal epoxy pins.I will then shape the wood to conform to my hand and put the cord wrap on it,seal it ,etch the aluminum with vinegar and paint..I'll post pics of the finished deal. Do you think this will work and stay with me forever and ever? dick

That shall be with you for as long than you shall live, Dickens. As long as you don't drop it, or throw it away, or drive over it, or leave it where some fooooo will steal it from ya. You c'n even shellac the cord wrap, if ya like.

Dick, I would think that it would be cheaper to buy one than to buy the aluminum to make one.
In another life I had a simple bracket for my Nikon F's. It worked great and helped prevent 'Red Eye'. The flash was on the left side of the camera and I held my right hand out like a Boy Scout sign and told the subjects to look there. Worked 99% of the time. When it didn't work, the subject insisted looking at the camera.
You can also get these brackets with a hole for a cable release. The cable release allows you to snap the picture in a similar action to that of squeezing the trigger of a gun.

Yes normally that would be the case........but my BIL owns an Aluminum Welding Shop and his scrap bin is mine any time I need it ,along with the brake, taps & dies etc in fact a compllete run of the shop,,,,,you see he owes me LOL ,plus he will do all the welding I need done, yea its a nice setup. You know ,keep it in the family. I would rather design & fabricate my own bracket and have it my way than pay $39.00 for a POS and then have to modify it to suit my needs. dick
