There are a couple of colleges that had really great selections of public domain works that you could download for free in one or a couple or three different formats. I've got one of those HP super PDF things that has the software on it for reading books. It was real handy when I was working and traveling. Could put several books on it to read on the road or the airplane ride or whatever. I think at one time I had the complete works of Mark Twain on that thing. The LOML being a English Teacher, we've got hard copies of a lot of Steinbeck's stuff around the house, likely most of it because she taught American Lit a couple years before having all English Lit oriented courses these days. After my little "deal" with being raped by the Half Priced Bookstore here, I'm thinking of setting up a little book exchange, maybe at church or I might approach the public library nearby about it. When I was in the military, the post libraries had those, maybe a 4 foot bookshelf with four or five shelves. Folks could bring in the books they were finished reading and trade them for stuff they hadn't read. Even buying most of my books from Half Priced Bookstore, I seem to be reading myself through a fortune. ;D

Me too, Jerry! But it certainly beats NOT reading! I don't think I'd ever go for one of those PDF readers...I like the experience of reading a tactile book, and a computer just can't deliver in that regard.

I have been cleaning out Dad's house and came across a stack of plans from Colonial Workshop. Apparently they sold these plans back in the 70's. They are all on 8-1/2 X 11 sheets. The plans are all early american and colonial stuff, mostly easy construction. The stack of plans is about an inch high. I am offering them for just the cost of postage to send them to you. I have only one set so the first one asking gets them. Marv Marvin, Received them today! Very interesting! All appear to be 1 page project plans... I saw a 2 page plan once. All sorts of good ole stuff like: Wash Table Spice Racks / Cabinets Gun Racks Wall shelfs Bird houses Bookcases Spoon Racks Raised Panels... straight slanted edge (no fancy stuff) ... just to name a few... No fancy stuff here... I'd say the joinery consists of Rabbets, Dados, Grooves, maybe hinge mortises, Butt joints, and maybe a Half-Lap once in a great while. Lots of scrolling profiles like on wall shelves, etc. I got a few ideas from looking at them... I found them very VERY interesting. Oh, and NOT ONE plan has a Copyright notice on it; therefore, I'd say this stuff is "public domain" and can be copied.Marv, I have a check written & ready for tomorrow's mail. Thank you very much!

Horse ain't dead yet, is it? As _I_ understand it, you don't have to put a copyright notice in order to be copyright protected. However, i think the point is moot. The forum's official stance is that we will not provide a venue for copyright infringement if we can help it. That will get us shut down right quicklike. So, to further that goal.... Please do not discuss copying anything you personally did not author or do not have verifiable permission from the author on this forum. We will err on the side of caution in any cases that come up for the good of the forum.

I was wondering when the works of one of my favorite authors, John Steinbeck, would become public domain so I could download electronic versions for free You can still borrow them from your local library for free. Probably not in electronic format, nevertheless, still free.
