In parallel with Cody's rocker - I will be building a dresser changing table for my daughter. I am not as skilled as Cody - but I can post progress pics along the way. I will be doing a lot of stuff I never did before - at least did well.Right not - I am designing it in Solid works. I am modifying it from a pic I got at a furniture store. It's going to be challenging to me - both for the designing in Solid Works as well as building. The design is not yet complete. But this is the first in process of the design work. I will also post pics as I go.

Good on ya, Leo. It will certainly be great to have multiple in-progress builds going on. I'm excited to watch yours take shape.

For the most part - all traditional stuff like mortice and tenon, dados, rabits. I an not yet sure on the drawers - maybe box joint, maybe locking miter. The sides are 1/4 oak ply. The top will be a glueup. There will be 5 drawers and 2 cabinet doors. The doors will not be raised panel - but will be a flat panel. I will be using full extension heavy duty drawer slides I am building every joint - every cut - into the model When I go to actually built it - the model will be done and I can print a measured drawing of each component on 11 x 17 paper in I need to. I can also look at the model - and change transparencies of one component or make an exploded view. I have more objectives than to just build the dresser. I also need to get better at Solidworks. Solid works helps to keep me employed, and can broden my employment horizons. Also - it's a really nice design tool. If I ever got a customer that wanter one ;D I could duplicate it. So - right now - I am designing away. Again - I am NOT Cody, but I think it will be interesting none-the-less. We are also watching Rob, building a table - don't forget Rob. Remember his shaker boxes? I am still waiting for mine to show up in the mail.

My project is thoroughly pedestrian and forgettable. No, I haven't forgotten about the shaker boxes; my plan was originally to make a few for Christmas gifts, but work and other things got in the way and I didn't have as much time as I needed to make any. Sometime this year though, for sure.

I am definately hoping that you do continue posting progress pics of that. When you made your crib I loved watching your progress on that too.

OK - So I ran into difficulty trying to get the 1/2 plywood bottom to fit into a couple of rabits In between working on this I did some shop cleaning, Changed blades on my TS and SCMS. I also snoeblowered the driveway - and a double wide path to the woodshed. I cut the 14 foot walnut in half so I could store it. I went shopping, cooked supper, got lunch ready for work tomorrow. Anyway - this is todays progress.

OK OK I know --- I am slow. I am learning solidworks. I have the carcase pretty much done. Every cut - every drilled hole for adjustable shelf supports - every mortise and tenon - every rabit - every dado. It's in there. Every component will become a measured drawing. I don't think I have missed anything. Whew - $25.00 for plane? They are worth more like 200-300. I still need to model the adjustable shelves. I will model the brass pins too. I need to model the doors I need to model the drawers - with the drawer slides. I think it's looking good so far.

Looking good, Leo. I sure wish I had the brains and patience to learn a program like that or even Sketchup. When I try, mine look more like they were done with an etch-a-sketch. Looks to me like you are getting real close to making sawdust.

Joe - yes
I will be doing the doors and drawers and shelves as separate assemblies then putting them into the model.
There are 4 adjustable shelves - two on each side. If you look close enough - you can see the holes for the 1/4 shelf pins. I will draw the shelf pins, brass of course and pun them into the model.
There will be two door - one on each side.
There will be 5 drawers - with full extension drawer slides.
I worked on the assembly almost all day yesterday. It is a great experience for me. Solidworks is a wonderful tool, and is very helpful on my resume if the need arises. This design as well as the entire printed plans will be part of my job interviewing if needed. Not that I will be designing furniture - but it shows versatility and operation proficiency with Solidworks, or any other modeling software. Besides all of that - I enjoy it.

OK - At some point I know this will get interesting to youz guyz. But for now - I am designing - and learning. My plan is to end up with a full set of plans along with a full Power Point presentation through the build process. From the model I will be making a full set of measured drawings. Once complete I will put together a booklet and a CD. Who knows - maybe I could sell the plans some day -- HA! Anyway - I did the small drawer assemblies today. Sorry, no dado's - just box joints.

WHEW - I did a LOT of ground work today. Spent not one minute in the shop - but I did a lot. Like I said - I will end the design faze with a full set of plans - measured drawings. I needed to learn how!! So I found the right printer setings for the 11x17 and I made my Solidworks templates. I created my first real drawing - from a real model. Well the model is not yet finished. I also needed to redo the model - to more match the way the dresser will be built. I will me making right and left side assemblies before assembling the entire carcase. You will see it as I go along. Seems like I didn;t really do all that much - but I did. Ground work doesn't often seem like much cause it doesn't realy "show" much. Soo, Here is the beginning of the booklet I will be mking The cover sheet The first drawing - of many To follow up - when I build it - I will post the entire process here - but I will also be creating a booklet. Kinda like the video - but with stills and no audio.

Looking forward to seeing it happen... You're really doing it right! ;D ;D Thanks Joe. I don't know about doin it right. I am not sure just how many people would go to this extent to build a dresser. This is pretty intense on the design side. I am designing the doors right now. I am modeling even the door router bit set and cutting that into the model members. I will have the two top drawers done by the end of the day tomorrow - which will complete this segment of the design phase. I am also going to make a removable "changing" tray top. That will hold diapers, powder, lotion and a changing pad. I am toying with the idea of solid wood raised panels with a design engraved in the front. Likely not - but I was thinking about it. Anyway - I didn't really think anybody was lookin in. I know this stuff it pretty dry to most. I will be makin sawdust this week with it. That might be a little more exciting.

Oh i'm lookin! I'm watchin Nice stuff... About that drawer drawing ya showed .. you got the groove for the bottom splitting on a finger in the finger joint - are you gonna haunch the other finger so it fills the hole? Otherwise, you'll end up with the same thing I did on my end tables - I didn't get a dovetail aligned with the groove and I live forever with a gaping hole (1/4x1/4 or so) mocking me everytime i open the drawers. One day I'll rebuild 'em and that'll fix that
